Come anticipato ieri anche oggi siamo rimasti fermi qua per lasciare che il freddo faccia il suo lavoro gelando di nuovo tutte le parti esondate. Il gelido vento di nord est che ha cominciato a soffiare questa notte ci ha ridato le speranze di poter continuare il nostro viaggio verso Nome. Questa mattina ci siamo riuniti con Marlin ( il musher locale che ci guiderebbe con la motoslitta a Koyuk ) per avere la sua opinione in merito a questa pericolosa situazione. Ci ha confermato che fintanto che il fiume che scorre a fianco del villaggio non fosse completamente rientrato e gelato solidamente non si poteva considerare di partire perché la tundra ed il mare sarebbero stati ancora allagati.

Per convincerci ci ha raccontato terribili storie di suoi compaesani che non hanno seguito le dure regole del Nord e si sono avventurati nella Baia di Norton incautamente, perdendo la loro vita per ipotermia conseguente al contatto con acqua e successivo congelamento. In realtà io ero convinto fin da ieri che dovevamo aspettare il momento opportuno. Così oggi ho approfittato per cambiare le suolette della mia slitta duramente provate dai sassi e terreno gelato incontrati da Unalakleet a qua e ricontrollare tutta la mia attrezzatura ed abbigliamento.

Il marito di Lena Gonangan Savetilik ci ha regalato del salmone e della carne di caribu' per tutti i cani mentre Chris si è fatta spedire da Nome tramite la sua compagnia aerea Bering Air 2 sacchi di mangime premium e della carne che abbiamo diviso tra i tre teams.
Linda la maestra che ci ospita ha preparato dell'ottimo tacchino al forno mentre io e Gianni il Cameraman abbiamo pelato e cucinato delle patate che poi tutti e 7 assieme al Direttore della Scuola Jim, sua moglie Jayne, Lena e suo marito abbiamo mangiato insieme in casa del Direttore. Forse una tregua di questa genere era provvidenziale anche per far riposare i cani e noi stessi provati soprattutto dall'ultima settimana di viaggio sotto una bufera costante di neve e…acqua nell'ultimo tratto.
Domani ci accompagna Dan Takak dopo una riunione alle 9. Start intorno alle 10 am per una lunga giornata sulla Baia di Norton verso Koyuk a 100 km a Nord di qua.

…..As anticipated yesterday even today we stayed here to let the cold do its job freezing up all the overflowed sections. The frigid wind from north east which has started to blow last night gave us again the hopes to continue our trip to Nome.
In the morning we all met Marlin ( the local musher who might guide us with a snow machine to Koyuk ) to discuss about this dangerous situation. He confirmed us that until the river beside the village is not completely frozen solid we shouldn't even considering to start because the tundra and the sea ice would be still overflowed.
In order to convince us he told us some terrible stories about his village's mates who didn't follow the strict rules of the North and ventured carelessly, losing their lives for hypothermia because of the contact with cold waters, consequently freezing to death. To be honest I knew from the beginning that we were not going to leave until the right moment. So today I did some other jobs like changing the plastics of my sled almost destroyed after the trip from Unalakleet on rocks and frozen grounds and checking all my gear and clothing.
Lena Gonanag Savetilik's husband gave some salmon and caribu' meat for all the dogs while Chris had her sent with her Airline Bering Air 2 bags of Premium Dog food and some meat to be shared among all the teams.

Linda the teacher who is hosting us has cooked some turkey in the oven while I and Gianni pealed and cooked potatoes that all of us 7, Jim the Principle of the School, his wife Jayne, Lena and her husband ate together at the Principle's house.
Maybe a break of two days like this was really needed to rest the dogs and ourselves a bit stressed after a whole week of travel under snow storms….and waters in its last section.
Tomorrow Dan Takak will lead us out of here after a meeting at 9 am. Start around 10 am for a long day of travel towards Koyuk 60 miles north.
