SHAKTOOLIK - temp. 0c, bufera di neve con vento forte a 60 km/h

Dopo aver tenuto una splendida presentazione per gli studenti eskimesi di etnia Inupiat della locale Scuola che hanno cantato e battuto le mani per tenere il ritmo delle mie canzoni come mai finora, abbiamo incontrato un musher locale Marlin Sookiayak per chiedergli le condizioni della pista per Koyuk a 63 miglia ( 105 km )
a nord di qua. Le notizie purtroppo sono pessime perché il vento caldo da sud - ovest che sta soffiando in maniera pesante da ieri ha contribuito a portare un'alta marea che ha invaso non solo tutta la parte ghiacciata di mare che dovremmo attraversare maanche un tratto di costa che pensavamo di utilizzareper arrivare a Koyuk in alternativa alla pista sulla Baia di Norton. Ci sono estese parti con esondazioni alte fino a 150 cm !!!! Siamo forzati a fermarci qua fino a che il vento non si calma e la marea non si ritira dandoci la tregua necessaria per passare a nord. In questo caso Marlin è disponibile a guidarci fino a Koyuk ma SOLO una volta sicuri delle condizioni del ghiaccio superficiale. Non possiamo assolutamente considerare l'idea di avventurarci verso Koyuk senza le assolute garanzie di percorribilità per i cani e per noi. Domani mattina alle 10 ci aggiorniamo con Marlin che nel frattempo avrà parlato con amici in Koyuk e prenderemo una decisione. Abbiamo perciò approfittato per tenere ulteriori lezioni nelle classi per i bambini entusiasti di averci con loro.
Ho avuto il privilegio di incontrare LENA GONANGAN, figlia di Myles il corriere postale eskimese che trasportò il siero da Unalakleet a Shaktoolik. Una persona eccezionale che ci ha regalato momenti importanti e raccontato storie curiose. I cani sono un po' infastiditi per il vento ma per fortuna non fa freddo per cui tutto ok. Questa sera Megh e Ciors , i vecchietti del team, dormiranno nell'ingresso della casa di Linda che ci ospita e mi ha esortato a farlo. Un occasione per coccolarli più a lungo dopo tutti gli altri cani del Team.
…..after a wonderful presentation for the eskimo Inupiat students of the local village school who sang and clapped hands for rhythm at my songs as never during this trip, we met a local musher Marlin Sookiayak to ask him about the conditions of the trail to Koyuk 63 miles north of here. Very bad news unluckily because the warm south west wind which is blowing hard since yesterday combined with the high tide created the conditions for a very high overflow on the sea ice that we would have to cross on our way to Koyuk and even on the alternative overland trail with waters as high as 4 feet !!! We are forced to stay here until the wind subsides and the tide goes out giving us the necessary break to allow us to travel safely. ONLY in this case Marlin is available to guide us to Koyuk. We cannot afford to take any chances for the dogs and us ! Tomorrow morning we'll meet again Marlin who will have talked in the meantime with some friends in Koyuk checking the conditions over there and only after this we will make a decision. So we went back to the School for some more lessons in the classrooms for the kids and teachers enthusiastic to have us there. I had the privilege to meet LENA GONANGAN, daughter of Myles, the eskimo mail carrier who transported the serum from Unalakleet to Shaktoolik . A special person who gifted us with important moments and stories. The dogs are a bit annoyed by the wind but luckily it is not so cold, so everything is ok. Tonight Megh and Ciors the elders of the Team will sleep, in the porch of Linda's home ( she invited me also to do it ) . One very good chance to pet them a bit longer …with all the other dogs of my team. Yours ARARAD K
