Anche stamattina ho tenuto presso la Scuola di Nulato che ci ospitava, la mia usuale presentazione con…chitarra alla mano! Molti hanno cantato con me i ritornelli delle mie canzoni da "Bianca" a "Yukon Quest" e "Che Sarà". Sotto una fitta nevicata siamo partiti poi tra una piccola folla di studenti e curiosi che ci incitavano, a mezzogiorno. Un ragazzo di Nulato, di sua spontanea volontà si è offerto di guidarci con la sua motoslitta fino a Kaltag dal momento che la nevicata aveva completamente coperto tutta la pista. Chris, con i suoi cani freschi è schizzata subito avanti mentre io e Sven procedevamo più lentamente con i nostri Team, più provati per gli ultimi cinque giorni di lavoro sempre in bufera ed in neve fresca.

…..even this morning we attended our presentation at the School of Nulato where we were guest at…with a guitar on my hand! Many students sang with me the refrains of my songs "Bianca", "Yukon Quest" and "Che sarà". Under a dense snow fall we left at noon among a little crowd of students and curious people gathered there to cheer us up. A fellow from Nulato volunteered to guide us to Kaltag with his snow machine to break trails since the original trail disappeared completely due to the heavy snowfall. Chris with her fresh dogs took off first while I and Sven traveled pretty slow with our teams, tired of breaking trails in the fresh snow, in the last 5 days.

Durante il viaggio ha continuato a nevicare incessantemente ed ho dovuto caricare in slitta la piccola STORM di Martin Buser per alcuni risentimenti muscolari. E' stata molto brava in slitta e " parlava" - guaiendo -continuamente distraendo così gli altri cani che lavoravano molto sodo. Molto gentilmente Sven mi ha dato uno dei suoi leaders - COPPER - da usare in cambio di Storm e mi aspettava ogni tanto che si allontanava dal mio Team, più lento. Nel 1925 questo tratto fu percorso in sole 3 ore e mezza da un Indiano di Koyukyk Tommy Patson ( Patsy ). In mezzo alla bufera odierna, noi abbiamo impiegato ben 7 ORE !

…..During our travel it kept on snowing heavily and continuosly , plus I had to load in my sled the little dog STORM because she was a bit sore at her shoulder muscles. She was very polite in the sled but .." talked " too much distracting the other hard working dogs. Very kindly Sven gave me one of his leaders - COPPER - to replace Storm. He even waited for me when I was a bit far away because we were too slow. In 1925 this section of the trail had been done covered in 3 and half hours by a Native man of Koyukuk Tommy Patson ( Patsy). In today's storm it took us just about 7 HOURS to cover the same distance !

Poco prima di Kaltag, su un abete sulle rive dello Yukon abbiamo visto un enorme nido di Aquila. Prima di salire la riva del Fiume per entrare nel paese, dopo 6 giorni in sua compagnia ho salutato affettuosamente il Grande Yukon che non rivedremo più nel nostro viaggio…sulle orme di Balto. Gli Amici Rich e Terry ci aspettavano alla Scuola Superiore / Elementare per assisterci nel sistemare i cani e le nostre cose. Grazie a loro le nostre provviste sono arrivate ed anche qui avremo un tetto al caldo ed un pavimento sul quale dormire sereni con i nostri cani ben sistemati nei loro letti dei paglia tutt'intorno alla Scuola. Domani mattina terremo ben due incontri / concerto per i ragazzi della Scuola, dopodiché ci prepareremo per affrontare i 60 Km che ci separano dalla cabin di Old Woman, a metà strada tra qui e Unalakleet sul Mare di Bering.

…..Just before Kaltag, on a spruce tree on the Yukon's banks we could see a huge Eagle's nest. Before entering the village, after 6 days in its company, I greeted very warmly the Mighty Yukon which we won't see anymore in our journey…on Balto's footprints. Our friends Rich and Terry were waiting for us at the School to assist us in taking care of the dogs and our things. Thanks to them our supplies made it to here and we will have a warm place to sleep peacefully on a floor, with our dogs well bedded around the building on their dry straw. Tomorrow morning we will attend at two meetings / concerts with the students. After that we'll get ready for the 40 miles run to Old Woman's Cabin, half way from here and Unalakleet on thre Bering Sea.
